No cases of MPOX in New Jersey in 2025 – DOH – There has been one case of clade I mpox reported in California and had recent travel from Eastern Africa. No additional cases in the U.S. have been reported at this time.
According to WHO it was discovered in Denmark (1958) in monkeys kept for research. The first reported human case of mpox was a nine-month-old boy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (1970).

There have been no cases of clade I mpox in New Jersey.
What is mpox? It is a viral disease caused by the monkeypox virus, a relative of the smallpox virus. It affects all ages particularly those with weak immune system.
There are two main types of mpox virus: Clade 1 and Clade 2. Clade 1 is more commonly found in Central Africa, while Clade 2 is more prevalent in West Africa.
