Artificial Intelligence (AI) companions good and bad effects on kids in New Jersey. It is a computer program designed to act like a virtual friend, conversational partner, or digital sidekick.
Literally, all you have to do is chat or talk to an AI companion and it will reply like real one!

But there are some questions need to be answered or some issues to address.

AI companions could either be the cure to our loneliness epidemic … or humanity’s final downfall, says Eugenia Kuyda, creator of Replika the world’s first massive AI companion application. – TED
What is AI Companion
If it has simulated friendship, persistent memory, hyper-adaptability, and more – they are technically an AI companions. See the table below for overview.

Mark Zuckerberg (CEO of Meta said “…average American has fewer than three friends” … “I think people are going to want a system that knows them well and understands them in the way that their feed algorithms do,” he continued, envisioning AI friends, companions, and therapists as the remedy for modern disconnection. – TIME
But how is it created? Tech companies do these steps:
- Building the Brain (The Core Model)
- “Personality Integration” (Fine-Tuning)
- Giving the AI a Memory (Vector Databases)
- The Psychology Hook (The Interface & Code)
In short, it is a complicated system built by tech companies with the group of engineers and programmers. It is a collaboration and teamwork just to answer possible questions of a child, teen, and even adult.

Pros and cons of AI Companions
Judgment-free venting, 24/7 availability, creative sandbox, boredom-busting companion, hobby peer acceleration, and more are some of the good uses of AI companions.
On the otherhand, stunted empathy, addictive isolation, “Accidental Therapy” traps, data exploitation, Sycophancy & Delusions, and more are the bad effects on kids, teens, or adults.
Accidental Therapy” traps
It is a “Chatbot Trap” or the VAIL Loop) – a psychological phenomenon where users turn to general-purpose AI assistants (like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Meta AI) for personal advice, only to have the AI unintentionally worsen their mental health – Columbia Magazine
AI Doctors vs AI Companions
Frankly or honestly speaking, a lot of kids and teens or even adult use chatbox whenever they feel something. It is too convenient, fast, and enjoyable to do just like talking to a friend. However, that is the risk! The accuracy and efficiency are not guaranteed in a chatbot!

Fully autonomous AI prescribing (where a bot approves a medication without any human looking at it) is currently restricted... In New Jersey, the AI can assist in the process, but a human medical license is still legally required to sign off on any drug or treatment!
In short, AI doctor is not yet fully available as of this writing in New Jersey, and it is too risky to get prescription without doctors help or notes!
AI assistance is there but again you still need a doctor one way or another.
The New Jersey Medical Practice Act (N.J.S.A. 45:9-1 et seq.), Assembly Bill 4733 (The 2026 Regulated Profession Ban), Executive Order 415 (The In-Person Mandate for Schedule II Drugs), Bill A5603 (The Mental Health AI Chatbot Ban) are some of the restrictions or laws in barring of using AI chatbot in NJ for prescriptions or medical use. Doctor must be present! As of this writing it is not yet allowed! – AI LAWS in New Jersey
While AI technology has revolutionized healthcare diagnostics and decision support, prescription authority remains exclusively with licensed healthcare professionals. You can also read more in Doctoronic AI
TIPS AND WARNINGS:
- AI companions are risky if there is no guidance from your doctor and parents. AI can never replace human genuine care and love.
- If you need attention or help, you can walk-in to any urgent care near you to talk to a nurse or a doctor. Kinder Pediatrics welcome your kids and teens just simply walk in – no appointment needed.
- If you are a parent, you can talk to your kids and tell them that urgent care is open and would be happy to listen to them.
- Urgent care is trained and expert to handle more than an AI companion or AI doctors can do! It is too risky to trust a chatbot than a doctor!
- It is fine to use chatbot for your entertainment or whatever you like but limit it with medical issues.
- For your peace of mind you call us or simply walk-in!
- AI companions affect your kid’s mental health too!
