Out of Network Provider

Out of Network Provider. Basically, out of network provider is a healthcare professional or facility that doesn’t have a contract with your specific health insurance. When you avail or subscribe to a health insurance in New Jersey or in other states, you have an assigned doctor to treat you or see you.

Hence if you go to a doctor that is not assigned to you, that facility or provider is out of network to you. Go to your assigned doctor or you pay out of pocket.

How to determine if a provider is in or out of network? Just call your health insurance or see and read your contract to them.

According to Health Insurance Organization:

“Depending on an individual’s health insurance plan, expenses incurred for services provided by out-of-network health professionals may not be covered at all unless it’s an emergency. Or they may be covered but with higher out-of-pocket costs than the member would pay for the same care received from an in-network provider. The federal cap on out-of-pocket costs only applies to in-network care (and only care that’s considered an essential health benefit). So out-of-pocket costs for covered out-of-network care can be much higher, or even unlimited.”
